Modules

The WOCAT framework is flexible and open. Specific modules can be added to the WOCAT Questionnaires on SLM Technologies (QT) and Approaches (QA) to gain further in-depth knowledge on a particular topic. Currently available are the following three Modules which, however, are not yet integrated as part of the Global SLM Database, i.e. the collected data cannot yet be uploaded in the Database neither searched for.

Gender-responsive SLM

In line with the UNCCD Gender Action Plan (GAP) and guided by the idea to build back better, the aim of this module is to add a gender lens to SLM Technologies and Approaches and assess their gender-responsiveness. It evaluates how gender-responsiveness of SLM Technologies and Approaches can be improved, stepping up adoption and dissemination, making SLM beneficial for women and men alike.

This module, developed with the UNCCD Secretariat, supports project planners, designers and implementers to identify, realize and scale gender-responsive SLM within the framework of LD/SLM/LDN projects and programmes.

The integration of the module into the Global SLM Database is currently under development and will be available at the end of 2023. The relevant questionnaire is available in English, French and Spanish.

Land tenure for SLM

FAO and WOCAT have joined forces to integrate the land tenure dimension into the Global SLM Database.

The standardized tool helps land users and project managers/technicians to link land tenure considerations to specific SLM practices. It takes a people-centered approach in investigating what are the priorities concerning land tenure to support the adoption of SLM practices; assessing how the existing tenure governance system in the practice area is serving the tenure needs of the community and observing how these needs may be changing as a result of the SLM practice implementation. It then guides communities in linking their observations to the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security (VGGT) Pathways to prioritize areas for tenure interventions.

Currently the tool is being piloted in the field in collaboration with the Land, Landscape and Development Research Lab (LLandDev) in Madagascar and therefore not yet available for download.

Climate Change Adaptation (CCA)

The CCA module is a supplement to QT and helps to assess whether SLM Technologies are or can be further adapted to gradual climate changes and climate-related extremes. It includes a questionnaire (QCCA) and related data entry in the Global SLM Database. This module focuses on individual SLM Technologies and not on areas or landscapes. Furthermore, it does not replace other tools that are available to assess overall resilience at farm or even landscape level.

An analysis part will be included in the online database to support the assessment of the vulnerability or resilience of SLM Technologies. The analysis shall help visualize results using simple graphs and illustrations. The results of the analysis can be used in the decision-support process to negotiate with stakeholders whether Technologies should be adapted or completely changed under different climate change scenarios.

The QCCA is currently available in English, French, and Spanish.
