This agroforestry system provides protection against strong winds, heavy rains and flooding. Soil erosion has been reduced due to improved soil cover by the inter cropping, and through leaf litter. Furthermore, about three quarters of the crop residues are left on the field as mulch and the remainder is used as fodder. Soil organic matter and soil fertility has improved.
After fencing and applying manure on the bare soil, this once heavily degraded slope was converted into a fruit and fodder plot producing a high yield which covers the family's needs.
